Jim Fannin Show: Survival Skills When Things Go Wrong

Welcome to the Jim Fannin Show! This week’s episode is all about survival skills when things go wrong.  Yes…sometimes we get ambushed by the unexpected, unwanted and unimaginable.

Most listeners to this show are eternal optimists, since it is America’s Most Positive Podcast. You prepare for your life to go right.  You clearly see what you want.  You see your bright future in the distance. However, sometimes things go wrong.  This desire for the best outcome can conflict radically with reality. How do you respond when things go wrong?

What triggers your negative feelings?  Politics?  Finances?  Your spouse?  Your children?  How about your mother-in-law or father-in-law?  How about a teammate or co-worker?  Or maybe, it’s the ridiculous long line at the DMV or rush hour traffic in Atlanta, LA, NY or Chicago?  You want to lash out. You may want to give up. Aren’t you mentally drained and tired of the negativity? It may seem one challenge is solved and a new one unexpectedly arises.

In this week’s show….you will be mentally transported to my kitchen. That’s right! Here you’ll find out with a simple exercise on my stove how you respond to things that don’t go your way.  You’ll see if you’re a carrot, egg or coffee bean.

When you don’t get your way, how do you respond? Do you instantly feel your chest tighten and your hands slowly curl into a fist?  Do you need to bite your lip for fear of mentally losing it?  Do you lash out with a swift volley of $%&@#* all designed to keep the negative intrusion at bay?  Do you look to blame others? Do you revert to the past?  Do you replay it in disbelief?

What do you do when things go wrong?

How long does it take to get a clear head?  How much time goes by before you can have reason over emotion?  Where is reason and why does it flee when bad times roll?
