Live Bold & Boss Up: Emotional Intelligence In The Workplace

Live Bold & Boss UpWhat is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)? We have been hearing about EQ Intel a lot lately and how it is different from IQ. From our last guest speaker to learning how to become “woke” to hearing about elevating one’s self to another level, Steph and Ash discuss how individuals can enjoy a successful career and better relationships by relying on their emotional intelligence. Studies have shown that people with high levels of emotional intelligence have greater career success, foster stronger personal relations, have effective leadership skills and are healthier than those with low emotional intelligence.

Boss Bites

1. Emotional Intelligence

a. Is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and sympathetically.
b. Many times, emotion or fear paralyzes you from acting. From actually taking those physical steps to get yourself out of trouble (shark attack – AHHH! or Interviewing or Public Speaking)

  • 2. Why we are discussing this?a. Studies have shown that employees with higher scores on measures of EQ also tend to be rated higher on measures of interpersonal functioning, leadership abilities, and stress management.
    b. Aristotle said: Anyone can become angry- that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree and the right time for the right purpose, the right way – this is not easy.
    c. So you have 3 broad parts of the person (IQ / EQ and personality) which really takes all 3 to go into how we think and act

3. Four Steps of EQ

a. Self-awareness, self-management social awareness, and relationship management

b. Similar to a SWOT analysis of your feelings

4. Feelings are not good nor bad!!!

a. We have always been taught anger is bad / being sad is bad and happy is good. But what if they are just indicators to help guide you to making smarter decisions like a part of that gut feeling?
