Welcome to the Jim Fannin Show! It’s officially October and we are underway into the 4th quarter. As you peruse your remaining visions and goals, check if they have been set too high or too low. In on-boarding clients over the last 40+ years, I’ve had to bump each person’s vision and goals at least 25%, especially where it pertains to money. I even had an NCAA golf champion look me in the eye and tell me that he didn’t think the world’s #1 title and even the top #10 on the PGA Tour were possible. Needless to say, he reached world #1 status and finished the year as Player of the Year. Most of us do not think BIG enough.
Most don’t have the eye of the tiger.
What was your biggest dream? Did you accomplish it? If not, does it still rattle around in your mind? Have you given up on it or forgotten it altogether?
What is thinking big for you now! What dream is still possible for Q4? Does this thought take you out of your comfort zone?
It’s not too late as you do have 91 days left in 2019! In the last year, I’ve seen a retired professional baseball player return to school to acquire his PhD. I know a woman who recently started her own clothing business. A young college football coach has visions of roaming the professional gridiron as a head coach. He has a plan in place and the pro ranks have already noticed him. Another college coach recently saw his dream of guiding the best college golf team in America and a former teacher now has her own publishing company.
Dream big! Make it happen.
- Envision the dream becoming reality. You must see it in all its color and hues. Make it real. This step sounds easy. It is not. I know a woman who dreams big. She envisions running the marathon as she sits in a wheelchair. Her dream needs commitment and courage. She has both. She will run.
- This mental step can block or encourage the real step toward your dream. When you have moved away from your mentally dormant ways, identify the resources needed to advance your vision. Is there another person with a proven business model that has already blazed their trail that might act as a beacon of hope? Interview them. Visit them. Learn from them. This is happening now with an investment banker in New York City that wants to open a wellness studio. She has committed her first few steps toward her dream.
- Eye of the Tiger. This is the look of the Zone performer. Last Sunday I watched the iconic band The Ides of March shoot a music video for their new album in the front of the house of Chicago shock jock, Mancow. For the small group of people attending the shoot, frontman Jim Peterik told the story of how the song Eye of the Tiger was created for the Rocky III soundtrack when he was with the group, Survivor. What a story! What a Zone performance! Here are the lyrics:
Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive
It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger
Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds ’till we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive
It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the dream of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger
Risin’ up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive
It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the dream of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
There’s one thing I want you to do for me. Come here. Win.
Most big dreams and the “Eye of the Tiger” are stymied because of excuses. Tennis great John McEnroe told me a long time ago, “Excuses are for losers!” He was right. Tear down your invisible safety net that keeps you from the high wire of possibility. Dreaming big takes a leap of faith. You must believe. You must expect. You must know deep in your heart that you can and will prevail.
Take your dreams out of their mental closet. Dust them off and inspect their possibility.
Here are four questions asked of thousands of champions during my career. These questions were also asked of all new clients. As you embark on a new quarter in your life, how will you answer them?
- “What is success for you this quarter? This has stumped most of my clients and still stumps most people. All know what they don’t want. Most do NOT have specific answers fleshed out. Each need a blueprint, as none of my clients arrived (out of 2000+ clients) with one tucked under their arm. With few exceptions, the ones that answered this question sold themselves short.
- “What do you want to accomplish by 12/31/19?” You know what you want, but don’t know how or when to consistently organize the execution.
- “What challenges keep you from success?” The challenge list can be intimidating. Most challenges center on what you think, which has a direct impact on your performance and results. Finding simplicity and life balance is a definite challenge for most. Meet the challenge!
- “Would you invest less than 3% of your waking hours to be the best you can be?” Men, women and children around the world have responded with a resounding “YES…But how do I do that?” has been their follow-up question.
Finally, we visit the Zone Café to determine the missing link in reaching the Zone of peak performance.
They say NO to big dreams. They? Who are they? They are the dream killers. They are the ones that are cowards. They? They are the meek. They are the real ones with no courage. Yes. They are realistic. Yes. They know the odds BUT “They” don’t know YOU!
Dream big. Good fortune favors the Eye of the Tiger.
