Inside The Dugout w/Kevin Kennedy & Rich Herrera: May 13, 2016

ITD - PHOTO FOR RI SHOWOn this edition of “Inside The Dugout,” Kevin and Rich discuss Max Scherzer’s 20 strikeout game. Kevin recalls what it was like to be in the dugout for Roger Clemens’ second 20 strikeout game and we ask Kevin the difference in stress level for a 20 strikeout game versus a perfect game. Kevin explains how much throwing from the stretch under duress takes it toll on a hurler. We go back and forth on no hitters we have been a witness to in person.

The guys also discuss Bryce Harper and his one game suspension for cursing at the umpire that ejected him that night during the walk off celebration but the Nationals. Kevin elaborates on what a manager should tell Harper after the game and what a manager needs to do when something like that happens. Also, a fun story on why Harper is lucky umpires have changed since the “good ‘ol days” and how Major League Baseball used to be.

Finally, we talk about balls and strikes and how it’s really not true that certain catchers can frame a pitch. We also talk about what an actual ball and strike is and what it’s not. Have you ever wondered why umps miss so many pitches on “K Zone and Fox” box, Rich explains what the real system to judge balls and strikes used by MLB is like and how it differs from what we see on TV.
